Why 16 Teams in a Playoff?

Why 16 Teams? This is why!

Imagine the NFL implementing a system that would never allow for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, or Green Bay Packers to even have a chance to play for the opportunity to play or win a Super Bowl. Every football fan would agree that some of the greatest teams ever, and some of the greatest Super Bowls ever played have been with those teams.

What if the NCAA were to implement a system in College Basketball that would not allow two teams from the same conference to make it to the Sweet 16 or Final Four? How often have we seen two teams from the ACC, PAC 10, Big East, and other major Conferences have more than 1 Team make the Sweet 16 and even Final Four in College Basketball. Correct us if we are wrong, but there would be some outrage. The question is, how come we continue to live with a system that does this very thing in Division 1 College Football.

College Football has a system in place that does not and will never allow the schools from smaller markets (mid major - Non BCS Conferences) to play for or win a national championship under the current system. This same BCS system that hurts the mid majors (Non BCS schools) also hurts the major conferences (BCS schools) by disallowing two teams that may be the best two teams in the country to play for the National Championship because they are from the same BCS conference. It also disallows more than two teams from the same conference to be able to play in BCS Bowl games - even though one conference on a given year may have 3 of the 10 best teams in the country - such as the SEC.

If all of the other Divisions of College Football can have a Playoff that includes all conference champions, there should be absolutely no excuse why Division 1 cannot have a 16 team Playoff with equal access for all Division 1 schools. In 2007, Twelve (12) UNRANKED TEAMS defeated Top 5 Ranked Teams. Non-BCS Schools from every conference have defeated Schools from each BCS Conference (even the Sun Belt conference has wins against BCS Schools) and there have even been non BCS Conferences having winning records against BCS Conferences (see Mountain West Conference vs. the Pac 10 in 2008). The bottom line is that PLAYERS and COACHES should decide the outcome of what team from what conference is the best each year - not computer formulas and voting polls.

It is time that a 16 team Division 1 College Football Playoff System be implemented that allows equal access to all 119 Division 1 NCAA teams. There is time between the end of the regular season and the first of the year to have a 16 Team Playoff. The Bowl games can still take place for teams that do not make the Playoff and for teams that lose early. If you as a fan will watch or attend Division 1 Playoff games in December, please answer our Poll Question so that we may provide these results to the people currently in charge of the BCS system. The more data that we can collect in our Poll and Petition, the more power we will have in creating change and getting a system that is fair to Athletes, Coaches, and Fans from ALL DIVISION 1 Schools.

  1. I would enjoy reading more of what you have to say.

I think a 10-team playoff is a better solution. Admit the 6 BCS conference champions and 4 at large teams. The 6 conference champions would be given a bye through the first round, making the 4 at large teams play the first week. A 12-team playoff where only the top four receive a first round bye would also work, although then you’d have to go to the rankings in order to determine the top 4 conference champions. A 16-team playoff simply seems too big, especially for those BCS conferences that already have a first round playoff in the form of a championship game. And does anyone really think a 7-5 Sun Belt champion deserves to be in an elite playoff?!? The first time a Reggie Bush or Glenn Dorsey gets injured in the first quarter of a blowout to a crappy mid-major you’ll be hearing calls for reform again!
